We are pleased to invite you to the opening of “In Search of the Sea” an art exhibition for the researcher and curator Abdullah Al-Bayyari, as part of the Curatorial Art Projects by FACTORY/the Jordan National Gallery of Fine Arts.
At 6:30 pm on Wednesday 4/10/2023 at the JNGFA – Building 1.
This research project and resulting exhibition tracks the traces of the Mediterranean on a selection of artworks from the Eastern Mediterranean region (Egypt, Palestine, Syria, and Lebanon) from the JNGFA’s Permanent Collection. The exhibition is a reflection on the alternative meaning of the Mediterranean through both the textual and visual memory of its inhabitants on the eastern coast. Such exercise does not only address the direct signifiers of the sea within the artwork elements and iconography, but it also examines the politics of intertextuality and its traces in the techniques of drawing, painting, printmaking, sculpture, and the spatiality of the selected artworks. It also proposes a visual social history of this “great sea” to reclaim our right to it.
This exhibition will be accompanied by a program of talks and workshops that will be announced later.
